We all train for different reasons. Some of us want to be competitive in a certain sport, event or military school. Some train simply to be in a community environment with friends and push each other. Older individuals might train just so they can keep up and play with their grandchildren and for others it can be a matter of getting healthy again so that you aren't visiting the doctor every other week and you can make it up a flight of stairs without being winded.
As in everything we do in life we should have a clearly defined picture of WHY we are doing what we are doing. Most of us go about our daily lives without having a true understanding about ourselves and what we want to achieve. Why am I working this job? Why am I taking these classes? Why am I training on Friday night while my friends are out? And the list goes on and on forever.
Daily minutia in life can easily begin to take over everything we do and leave no time for ourselves. So it's always good to take some time out of your day to work on defining your why's and just getting back to zero. But for today we will talk about defining our why's pertaining to training but you can apply this to other parts of your life too.
First off unplug from the rest of the world, close your laptop, turn your t.v. and phone off, go to your favorite park or chair in your home and bust out the long lost pencil and pad of paper. Once you have gotten away from the rest of the world and you won't be disturbed for 20 minutes or so, start to define the perfect vision of yourself. Ask yourself these questions and write down ALL of your answers. What would you do if you had absolutely zero limitations, such as strength, money or intellect? Where would you spend your time and what would you do? Where do you see yourself in 3-5 years?
Once you have designed the perfect version of yourself, write down the reasons why it is important for you to achieve that vision. Ask yourself what your WHY is? What excites you the most to talk about? Where do you spend most of your time? What motivates you to achieve your why and what will happen once you achieve it?
As for myself, I started Inveniam Athletics to motivate and inspire others to become the best versions of themselves. I personally love seeing peoples faces light up after they achieve goals that they believed could never happen, no matter how small. I love being in an environment where everyone is there to motivate and push each other to do better.
Once you have written everything down take some time to reflect on what you have just written. Read over your why statement. It should excite you, it should motivate you, it should ignite a fire within you to get up and get straight to business! If it doesn't, spend more time defining your why until it fits you perfectly. Don't rush the process but don't spend hours trying to figure it out either. Write down what comes to you first and refine from there.
After you figured out your why; write it down, print it off, post it up, save it as your background, just put somewhere so that you can see it everyday. When life tries to take over and you are unmotivated to train, recite your why to yourself to help push you through.
